This module provides a review of the probability formulas, including the definitions of independent, complementary, and mutually exclusive events as well as the addition and multiplication rules.
Formula

Complement

If A and A' are complements then P(A) + P(A' ) = 1

Formula

Addition rule

P(A OR B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A AND B)

Formula

Mutually exclusive

If A and B are mutually exclusive then P(A AND B) = 0 ; so P(A OR B) = P(A) + P(B) .

Formula

Multiplication rule

  • P(A AND B) = P(B) P(A|B)
  • P(A AND B) = P(A) P(B|A)
Formula

Independence

If A and B are independent then:

  • P(A|B) = P(A)
  • P(B|A) = P(B)
  • P(A AND B) = P(A) P(B)
