Vol. 1: Chronologies of the Ancient World: Names, Dates and Dynasties . Johannes Renger and Walter Eder, eds.. 2006.

Vol. 2: Dictionary of Greek and Latin Authors and Texts . Manfred Landfester, ed. 2009.

Comprehensive one-volume encyclopedias

Oxford Classical Dictionary . 3rd ed. Simon Hornblower and Antony Spawforth, eds. Oxford. 1996. [ OCD 3 ]

Much broader coverage of thematic subjects than previous editions.

Dictionnaire de l'antiqueté . Jean Leclant, ed. Paris. 2005.

Somewhat broader than OCD 3 in coverage of time and, particularly, of space, since it deals with the entire Mediterranean basin, central and western Europe, and the Middle East in their own right too and not chiefly in relation to Greco-Roman civilization. (The editor-in-chief is a scholar of Egypt.)

Lexikon der alten Welt . Carl Andresen, Klaus Bartels, and Ludwig Huber, eds. Zurich and Munich. 1965. Reprinted in 3 vols., 1990.

Comprehensive encyclopedias intended for non-specialists, too

The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece and Rome . Michael Gagarin and Elaine Fantham, eds. 7 vols. Oxford, 2010. [ OEAGR ]

Aimed at a more general audience than the preceding works. Focuses not solely on facts but even more on their interpretation and significance (contrast Real -Encyclopädie ), and includes sections on the classical legacy. The bibliographies to authors and texts regularly list translations thereof. Many illustrations. The first volume contains a chronology, the last a topical outline and a comprehensive index.

The Cambridge Dictionary of Classical Civilization . Graham Shipley, John Vanderspoel, David Mattingly, and Lin Foxhall, eds. Cambridge, 2006. [ CDCC ]

Addressed to same audience as OEAGR . In addition to history, literature, and mythology, covers the social, economic, and cultural features of Greek and Roman society and stresses their legacy. Has even more illustrations than OEAGR , including maps, tables, etc.

Specialized encyclopedic works

Dictionnaire des antiquités grecques et romaines . Charles Daremberg and Edmond Saglio, eds . 5 vols. in 10 parts. Paris. 1877-1919. [ D-S ]

explain assimilatory nitrate reduction
Esinniobiwa Reply
Assimilatory nitrate reduction is a process that occurs in some microorganisms, such as bacteria and archaea, in which nitrate (NO3-) is reduced to nitrite (NO2-), and then further reduced to ammonia (NH3).
Elkana
This process is called assimilatory nitrate reduction because the nitrogen that is produced is incorporated in the cells of microorganisms where it can be used in the synthesis of amino acids and other nitrogen products
